In Part 1, we explored how Sivam (consciousness) and Sakthi (energy) are the two inseparable forces behind all of creation. Now we bring that cosmic principle into your body — because it is not an abstraction. It is happening inside you, right now.

1 — Where This Lives in You

Kundalini — The Sleeping Sakthi

The entire practice of yoga — the asanas, the pranayama, the meditation — is, at its deepest level, the process of awakening Sakthi and guiding her upward through the chakras to reunite with Sivam at the crown. Practitioners who experience deep meditation describe real sensations of energy rising through the spine, warmth or light moving upward, and a feeling of expanding awareness as the energy ascends through each chakra.

2 — The Two Rivers

Ida and Pingala — Feminine and Masculine

Ida Nadi flows along the left side of the spine — feminine energy, lunar, cooling, receptive, inward, and nurturing. It governs the right hemisphere of the brain: intuition, emotions, creativity, and the parasympathetic nervous system — the body's rest-and-restore mode. Ida is Sakthi in her quieter, more receptive expression.

Pingala Nadi flows along the right side of the spine — masculine energy, solar, warming, active, outward, and assertive. It governs the left hemisphere of the brain: logic, willpower, analytical thinking, and the sympathetic nervous system — the body's action-and-effort mode. Pingala is Sivam in his dynamic, expressive form.

Both Ida and Pingala spiral around Sushumna — the central channel running through the core of the spine — meeting and crossing at each chakra point, just as Sakthi and Sivam are forever entwined and inseparable.

When They Are Out of Balance

When Ida dominates, you may feel calm and introspective but lack the drive to act. Creativity flows but willpower fades. The mind drifts into daydreaming, passivity, or emotional overwhelm. When Pingala dominates, you may feel energised and focused but become restless, aggressive, or mentally overheated. You push forward relentlessly but lose touch with intuition, rest, and inner peace. Both extremes create imbalance. True health — physical, mental, and spiritual — arises when Ida and Pingala flow with equal strength and rhythm.

The Role of Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)

This is precisely why Alternate Nostril Breathing holds such a central place in yogic practice. By consciously alternating the breath between the left nostril (Ida) and the right nostril (Pingala), the practitioner directly balances the feminine and masculine energies within. When you breathe through your left nostril, you activate Ida. When you breathe through your right nostril, you activate Pingala. Nadi Shodhana brings both into harmony, creating the conditions for Sushumna — the central channel — to open.

When Sushumna opens, the Kundalini Sakthi rises freely through the central channel — moving upward through the chakras toward Sivam at the crown. This is the deeper science behind what appears to be a simple breathing exercise.

Before you can know the union of Sakthi and Sivam at the crown, you must first honour and balance the feminine and masculine that live within you every single day.

Ida and Pingala in Daily Life

You do not need to be in meditation to experience these two channels. They are active in every moment:
